MARILYN AND ME… My first painting in my new art studio
After almost 8 months without painting, following the death of my mother, the sale of my old studio, moving, renovation and moving to the new one, this summer I have painted my first painting in my new studio, the former family home. It is a large painting, in mixed media, in black, white and grey, with a couple of notes of colour, entitled MARILYN AND ME (in summer I dream of swimming pools Hockney style) (2023, acrylic, charcoal, graphite and coloured pencils on canvas, 150×150 cm):
“In my recurring dream, Marilyn Monroe appears marvellous, wearing the patterned dress she wore in the swimming pool scenes during the filming of Something’s Got To Give, the movie she left unfinished with her untimely death in August 1962. Radiant, she has just returned from a trip.
In the foreground, next to the actress, the spectator’s shadow, which is also mine, is cast across the grass towards the pool. Kneeling on the grass and knowing that she is the absolute protagonist of the painting, she looks at me relaxed. Or is it the spectator she is looking at? In the background, the porch of a typically American summer house opens onto a large swimming pool that occupies the middle ground of the painting from side to side, in a clear homage to Hockney’s pop.
In short, it is a dreamlike and suggestive summer scene, painted in shades of grey, black and white, in which the dress worn by the actress breaks the monochrome and adds two slight notes of colour to the painting.”
